Garden Warfare on XBOX ONE outperforms PS4 at retail

Garden Warfare launched on the PS4 and PS3 last week, with reports indicating it to have sold 39,735 units on the Playstation 4. This contrasts the XBOX ONE versions launch date which has reportedly sold 88,613 units. Obviously these figures need to be taken with a grain of salt until official NPD data is released, but it’s unlikely to change their place in regard to sales performance.

Neither of these figures are particularly promising for the title, which we reviewed on the Playstation 4 earlier in the week. However it could be said that the XBOX ONE version is seeing moderate success, whereas the launch on PS4 has been something of a disappointment.

This could be attributed to various factors; with the upcoming launches of both Destiny and then in the following month, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, many consumers are likely going to be playing reserving their time and cash for those titles instead. However the games timed exclusivity may be a factor and brings into question whether timed exclusivity damages a brand long-term.

    • Excellent game and I’m glad that I waited to get it on my PS4 rather than buy it earlier on my Xbox One.

Who knows for sure what drives these figures all the time, but my impression is that if a software company can release for both systems at the same time that they make every effort to do so. I do believe that if PS4 sales were hurt it is because of bad timing.

    • Nice for what??? that’s what happens when you release the game 6 month late on a platform

  1. Whats really funny is that there are a bbunch of Sony fans over on N4G claiming that they deserve lower sales because of timed exclusive, yet these same people claim that late ports with missing components on Wii U should be purchased by Wii U owners regardless.

I’ve always known that if an inferior game released on PS4, the way they release on Wii U, that it would suffer less sales.

Now I just wish a developer would use those low sales as a reason to not make games for PS4.

    • I agree! When the sales are lower on a system, that developer shouldn’t make another game for that system. Like Tomb Raider: the definitive edition. Oh wait a minute …????

    • So lets hurt the gaming community in general over something stupid. If anything, developers should stop making games for the One because Microsoft is selfish, closed minded jerks. They are unwilling to open up their servers for cross platform game play which would bring the communities across all platforms together as Sony is doing with PC. Love you Microsoft fanboys, I have owned almost every system and you guys are still yelling how great the one is when it is physically proven it has inferior hardware compared to the PS4. Don’t get me wrong i enjoy my one but do not play it nearly as much as i do my PS4, Especially when I can play with some of my PC buddies on Warframe from my couch instead of getting up and playing on my rig when I get tired. You are either 10 or your parents trapped you in a room full of lead paint when you were a child and let you go at it, either way your a tool.

  2. You gotta love the unbiased writing here. Had it been PS4 outselling the competition, it would receive the customary “hail to the king baby”… yet when it’s the other way around…. the author makes excuses as to why it “could’ have done poorly.

    • I only provided my insights into why it might occur, they weren’t excuses. The PS4 has a 10m install base, the XBOX ONE has 5m, so there have to be accountable rationale for the higher sales on XBOX ONE. So without these ‘reasons’ any game on PS4 should naturally outsell its XBOX ONE counterpart. I was only trying to explain why the opposed may be.

      • I think it was a balanced and interesting, if brief, article, Jozef. I’ve had Garden Warfare on Xbox One since early March and my kids just love it.
You have to remember that a higher percentage of Xbox One owners will buy more games compared to PS4 owners, simply because they have more disposable income. Many people bought the PS4 console simply because they couldn’t afford the ridiculously priced Xbox One research indicates that the PS4 owners have less disposable income to spend on games. With the PS4 outselling the Xbox One by about forty percent, you would expect a lot more PS4 copies of games to be sold, but this just isn’t happening on the ground.
A lot more statistics will be generated in the next few months with so many multi-platform games being released in quick succession, the sales figures per console will be eagerly anticipated!

    • Maybe it is a shocking situation because of the fact that there are 10 million PS4 units sold and many million fewer xbox one units sold? You mean to tell me that it’s only shocking because it’s selling more on the system that had so many fewer systems? Ridiculous! There should be twice as many sales on the PS4 simply due to amount of systems out there. If not then there is another factor. No?

  3. Opps minor edit:
CLICKBAIT at it’s finest. Comparing a game that was released months ahead on the Xbox One, then saying it didn’t do as well on the PS4 on day one. What’s next??? Rise of the Tomb Raider sells better on Xbox One on day one, even though it was released a full year ahead of the PS4??

  4. Eh, Digital Foundry says otherwise, and have the actual tools and expertise. They’re the only source I trust on matters like these. I’ve been playing the game and have encountered zero issues.

    Sales, not game performance, lol.

  6. Who buys games at retail? That means you bought the disc version. Everyone downloads games now.

Wow, fanboy much? I thought it was the other way around. And who cares about PvZ anyways? Nobody thats who.

The only reason why ms fanboys even acted like this game is anything special is because it was a timed exclusive. And you know how fanboys treat all exclusives (timed or not) like they are something special, even when in reality they are not. But i agree with the guys saying, that this is what happens when you release (a unpopular game at that) 6 months later. And seriously, 88k is also pathetic! So I wouldnt be bragging about how much better that is than 40k. Both all low. Also, i believe it also sold more on the X1, cuz it came out at a time when there were even less games/no games to play on the X1.Whereas now there are already way more games to choose from on the PS4 than there were on the X1 at that time. So its got more competition on the PS4 than it did on the X1. And Sony fanboys arent treating this game like some sort of special exclusive like the MS fanboys were. Fanboys and the gaming media make to much ado about nothing. And also, these number are from VGChartz, seriously!

Here’s the reason, because nobody cares about it. Doesnt matter that there are 10 million plus PS4 owners vs probably less than 5 million X1 owners. And this is only one day of sales. Talk about talking to soon. You people need to slow down on jumping the gun here. And this a PvZ we are talking about here people. This game isnt even worth talking about.

  9. To be a fair comparison, why did you not wait to see game sale performance over a 3 month period on PS4 then compare that to XBone 3 month performance ? This game is not a day one must have, it is not a AAA game, it is at best a shooter which belongs on the shooter box!

  10. Im sorry but your whole comment is just stupid. Other than andrewlbc’s, it might actually be the dumbest comment here. Ok first of all, whatever you “think” the sony fanboys are telling you. Its good advice. Why? Because 3rd party games dont sell on Nintendo systems, EVER!, PERIOD! So by them telling you to buy it, regardless of when it comes out or its state is them telling you to support 3rd party games in order to get more of them.

And 2.) the Wii U is a weak POS, so why would you expect better? quality ports? I know alot of you idiots think its more powerful than a PS360, but its really not. So accept that fact and stop fighting against reality. I know you’ll probably point to some game and claim that proves its more powerful. But i hate to break it to you. No its doesnt. The proof is in the pudding, the system is weak. So dont expect on PS4/X1 quality, becuase its not gonna happen

  12. Doesn’t even mention the timed exclusivity at all till the very last sentence. i guess there would be no point to this article at all if that had been done though since that one fact makes it obvious what the deal is here.

its like saying” i wonder why jack isnt here yet?” “oh i dont know lets call him and see” ” oh he isnt answering, i wonder if its cause he died 2 months ago in that car accident that decapitated him” oh well guess we will never know.
